Monschau is a small medieval town in the Aachen district in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, very close to the border with Belgium. Cobbled streets with half-timbered houses forming a fairytale town build at the Rur River, make it an idyllic escape in terms of a day trip from Brussels. You can simply enjoy wandering around the town, take a hike to the castle and in the surrounding forests, shop in the little craft shops or just go for a coffee and cake in the town. When visiting during the Advent period, you can enjoy a fairytale Christmas market in the town.
Christmas Market in Monschau
We usually took a day trip to this fairytale town in autumn or early spring but last year, we came here in December. Every weekend during the Advent period, a Christmas market is held in the town. And believe me, that was the best time I have ever experienced this lovely town! Everything was beautifully decorated, inviting you to enjoy the true Christmas spirit. The Christmas market in Monschau is probably the most romantic Christmas market in Germany and although many people from the neighboring countries come here every weekend, it is not as crowded as the larger markets in Germany.
The streets of Monschau are full of craft shops offering nice and original decoration, as well as cafés and restaurants. You will also notice bakeries that attract tourists with the smell of gingerbread, Christmas stolen and other kinds of sweet treats. I guess I don’t need to tell you that I hardly come back home without any purchase. 😉 There is a main Christmas market in the central square and then a smaller one which is more a place to grab something to eat. And as a complement to the markets, the Christmas House at the main square offers 3 floors of cute Christmas decoration!
The Christmas Market is held in Monschau every weekend during the Advent period, from Friday to Sunday from 11 to 8 p.m. (on Sunday only until 7 p.m.). More information here.
And if you don´t manage to come during the Christmas time, don’t be sad! The shops and cafes are open all year round, including the Christmas House. During nice weather, you can also do some hiking around, explore the castle from the 13th century overlooking the village or climb up the viewpoint.
