Where To Eat In Barcelona

by Michaela

When I arrived from Barcelona last week, I thought maybe I could write something about my favorite places to go eat in the city. Everybody knows what to see in Barcelona (and if not, check out 10 Things To See And Do In Barcelona), and everybody knows that the food in Barcelona is amazing, but there are so many wonderful places to try! I love to eat in Spain in general because (unlike France for example) even for a small price you can have a good quality meal, which is awesome! Even though I love to discover new places, I can’t wait to stop by in my favorite tapas bars and restaurants and I will now share these with you: Here are my tips on where to eat in Barcelona. Don’t forget to check out these places in the city center during your next visit!

Where to Eat in Barcelona

Txapela

This place is one of those I can never leave without visiting. Txapela is a pintxos bar and you will find three of those bar in Barcelona, although my favorite is the one at Passeig de Grácia. Pintxos are Basque tapas, usually a piece of bread decorated with cheese, salads, meat, fish, pieces of vegetables and much more, pierced together with a wooden stick. I love to eat at Txapela! I usually sit on the bar together with many other people, who all seem to have a good time eating pintxos and drinking sangria or cava. This way I can screen the pintxos that are available and see which one has just arrived from the kitchen. 😉 What I love here is that they also have about 5-6 vegetarian pintxos! Btw, the picture below was taken when we left around midnight last Monday but usually, earlier in the evenings this place is crowded and you may need to wait for the table. But the queue here is normal – don’t be scared! It worths waiting! 😉

Sagardi Barcelona

Sagardi is a similar concept as Txapela – pintxos bar where you can scan the majority of pintxos with your eyes on the bar in order to pick the best-looking ones. 😉 Here is also not a problem to get some vegetarian pieces, for example the one with tortilla, goat cheese or a sweet croissant with jam and cheese! Yummy!

Gustos Barcelona Comtal

We discovered Gustos randomly when walking through Born to the Old Town. On the wall, it was written that they serve one of the best paella in town which my partner approved after tasting it. Plus, serve paella in portions, which is not that easy to find (paella is usually for 2 people at least and once you don’t have your partner in crime, one paella is way too much for one). If you sit on the ground floor, you can also observe how they prepare the famous paella! The food is very good here and the service is well organized and attentive. Apparently, their mussels are delicious. I loved their tortilla or bacalao a la Vizcaina and their banana pie (kind of flan but very tasty)! Btw, they offer a lunch menu for 13 Euros – starter, main course, dessert or coffee plus one drink! This restaurant is a good quality/price ratio.

Mercat Princessa

Mercat Princessa is a tapa market in the center of quarter called Born. It is a cozy place with various mini bars offering tapas and in the middle, there are tables common to all bars. I love the bar serving croquettes! Even my favorite Txapela is present, although their offer is limited and the prices are higher than in their original bar. And if you wish to have a glass of wine of cava, the wine bar is also present. I would say, if you are looking for variety and don’t have much time, this is the place to be!

Navia

Right opposite the Estació de Franca, you will find Restaurante Navia which is a pleasant place to eat good quality Spanish food far from the crowds. They have our favorite cava Codorniú and last time we had an excellent courgette tortilla served with pan tumaca, a portion of queso curado, my boyfriend got some kind of jamón and croquettes. Simple and delicious!

El Nacional

Hidden on Passeig de Grácia, El Nacional is a concept of 4 different restaurants (meat, fish, tapas and rice) under one roof. Their different bars serve wine cava, beer, or cocktails. If not hungry yet, you can always stop by for a glass of a very good cava, Juvé y Camps. Very nice concept and interior, good atmosphere.

La Boquería

La Boquería is one of the best food markets in Europe and one of the best places to buy food in Barcelona. You will find almost all kind of fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, ham and sausages, but also some food ready to eat such as empanadas or hamburgers that you can eat on the spot, or just do your shopping here and have a picnic on the beach! It is opened every day except Sunday until 8 p.m.

Cheese’s Art

As you may guess from its name, Cheese’s Art is a paradise for cheese lovers. You can taste some torrada (large toasts with Spanish ham or various types of cheese), as well as fondue served in a bread! I was very hungry so I went for asparagus risotto and even though there were just traces of asparagus, it was delicious and I loved the combination of various types of cheese in it. In the summer people only sit outside and in the evenings you might need to wait for the table, which happened to us. But we just grabbed a glass of cava and sat on a bench right next to their terrace while waiting. 🙂

Lateral

Around Rambla de Catalunya, there are some good looking restaurants, coffee and tapas bars, although we did not enter as it seemed to us those are the typical places where the expats go and you almost do not hear Spanish there. However, in the surrounding streets, there are some nice places to try, such as for example Lateral that we discovered during our last visit. We never went to eat there though as many people were already waiting for the table, but this is definitely on our list for the next time as my boyfriend knows this restaurant from Madrid.

DelaCrem

And a sweet dot at the end! DelaCrem is a place where you get not only one of the best ice creams in Barcelona but also some good breakfast or coffee with homemade cakes. I loved their almond ice cream with amaretto but it was too warm outside and it would melt before I took the picture, so sorry guys, you will need to check their ice creams on your own! 😉
