Fairytale Mikulov

Today, I would like to show you Mikulov, a charming fairytale Moravian town, the way I experienced it. I felt in love with the town and here is why! Although I knew that one can expect an interesting place, I was nicely surprised. I think that Mikulov offers a perfect combination of historical sites, wine culture and natural wonders. If you go to the South of Moravia, be sure not to miss it! I hope this post will give you an idea of what Mikulov has to offer.

Fairytale Mikulov

The dominant of the town is a baroque castle that you can visit. The castle was on fire twice in its history and has been largely renovated, but you can still see pretty much during the visit as there is an exposition of the Mikulov Regional Museum. 

The center of the town is full of many charming and colorful houses, wine cellars inviting you to enter and taste some good wine, coffee places with mouthwatering cakes and much much more. If you need to wait for the next guided tour and still have enough time, you can have a drink (and cake) in Café Dolce Vita (Náměstí 29, Mikulov) which is just a few steps below the castle, just at the entrance from the main square. In case you would be looking for some vegetarian lunch, I can recommend the restaurant Sojka & spol. that is situated on the main square (Náměstí 198/10, Mikulov). We had both vegetarian and non-vegetarian lunch there (they also offer some specialties of Czech cuisine).

A nice activity to do in Mikulov apart from visiting the castle and wine cellars is a hike to the top of the hill called Svatý kopeček (Saint Hill). It is a pleasant walk in the natural reserve full of some rare herbs and flowers and from the top of the hill, you can enjoy a stunning view on the whole town of Mikulov with the castle and the vast landscape of the whole region, which is quite flat.

After the hike, you can have a treat – just have a walk in the streets of Mikulov and enjoy some good wines. Mikulov is surrounded by vineyards and it is here where some of the best Czech wine is produced. A place I can recommend is Volařík (elected as winemaker of 2011 and 2014) who has very good white wine – you can find their wine bar and shop at Kostelní náměstí 8 in Mikulov. I already knew this winery as they participate in a wine festival near my hometown that I sometimes attend, but found the place randomly while wandering in Mikulov. Try their Pálava!
